Ceiling Bulging With Water: Act Now Guide
A bulging ceiling is a reservoir forming above plasterboard that will fail — the only choice is whether it fails in a controlled way into your bucket, or catastrophically across the room. The response sequence takes five minutes and starts with electricity, not water: light fittings sit in exactly the wet zone, and a saturated ceiling with live wiring is the real danger in the room.
Electrics first, always
Switch off the lighting circuit for the affected area at the consumer unit — before touching anything else, and certainly before piercing. If water is visibly at or dripping from a light fitting, treat the fitting as live and dangerous until the circuit is confirmed off. When in doubt, switch off more rather than less.
Leave the circuit off until the ceiling is dry and, if fittings were wetted, until an electrician has checked them. Water in a fitting today is corrosion and tracking faults next month.
Stop the source
While the ceiling holds, cut the supply feeding it: main stopcock off (clockwise until it stops), and if the leak is fed by stored water — a loft tank or cylinder above — open the cold and hot taps around the house to drain the stored water through the taps rather than through the ceiling. Upstairs bathroom above? Stop using it entirely until the source is known.
If the water is rain-driven (arriving during a storm, near the roofline), shut-offs won't help — move to containment and get buckets positioned in the loft if it's safely accessible.
The controlled pierce
With electrics off and a bucket (or bin) positioned: pierce the bulge at its lowest point with a screwdriver or similar — one small hole. Water will stream, possibly for minutes; that's the reservoir emptying on your terms. Add a second hole if the bulge extends. Supporting the sagging area gently with a flat board while it drains can save the plasterboard around the holes.
What you're preventing is total collapse: saturated plasterboard fails suddenly and completely, bringing insulation, debris and the entire reservoir down at once. A drained ceiling is very often repairable; a collapsed one never is.
After the water: source, insurer, repair

Don't — pushing on a water-loaded ceiling can trigger the collapse you're avoiding, and soaked plasterboard won't reattach anyway. Drain first, support gently if at all, assess when dry.
