Electric showers: independence at a price

An electric shower heats cold mains water on demand through its own element — independent of your boiler and cylinder entirely, which means hot showers when the boiler's broken and no draw on stored hot water. Units are cheap (£80–£350), and like-for-like swaps are quick.

The physics sets the ceiling: a 9.5kW unit can only heat so many litres per minute, so flow is modest — noticeably so in winter when incoming mains runs colder. Hard water is the other enemy: scale kills elements, making electrics shorter-lived in the South East than the North West. As a second/backup shower or in homes with limited hot water, they're the sensible default; as the only shower in a family home with good hot water, they leave performance on the table.

Mixer showers: performance from your hot water system

A mixer blends your hot and cold supplies at a thermostatic valve — flow and temperature limited only by what the house delivers. On a combi or unvented system with strong mains, a mixer is transformative: high, balanced flow that no domestic electric can approach. Valves range £60–£400+, installs £200–£900 depending on exposed vs concealed and pipework needed.

On gravity-fed (loft tank) systems, mixers inherit the modest gravity pressure — often disappointing upstairs — which is where the pump-assisted variant enters: power showers (integral pump) and separate shower pumps boost tank-fed systems specifically. Pumps are for tank-fed systems only; they must not be connected to the mains.

Running costs and the winter question

Electricity per kWh costs roughly three to four times gas, so a shower heated electrically (electric shower, or immersion-heated cylinder) costs correspondingly more per minute than a gas-heated mixer shower. For a daily-showering household the gap is real money over a year — one reason gas-heated homes usually favour mixers for the main shower.

Winter flips one comparison: electrics visibly weaken (colder inlet water, fixed kW), while mixers hold performance as long as the hot water system does. If your current electric disappoints every January, that's the system's arithmetic, not a fault — and a higher-kW unit or a change of type is the fix.

Choosing: a two-question flowchart

Question one: what's your hot water source? Combi/unvented with strong mains → mixer for the main shower, electric only if you want boiler-independence as backup. Gravity/tank-fed → power shower or pumped mixer for performance, electric for simplicity. Limited or unreliable hot water → electric.

What's the difference between a power shower and an electric shower?

Opposites, confusingly named: an electric shower heats cold water itself; a power shower pumps your existing tank-fed hot and cold for flow. Power showers don't heat anything and need stored hot water; electrics need none.

Is a bigger kW electric shower worth it?

For winter performance, yes — 10.5kW vs 8.5kW is the difference between adequate and thin in January. Check the circuit first: higher kW frequently needs cable and protection upgrades, which belongs in the quoted price.

Why can't I put a pump on my combi to boost the shower?

Regulations prohibit pumping directly from the mains, and combis are mains-fed — the pump would also fight the boiler's flow requirements. Combi shower performance improves via the incoming main and the valve/head choice, not a pump.
