Airlock in Your Pipes: Symptoms and Safe Fixes

An airlock is a bubble of trapped air blocking flow in a pipe — usually the hot side of gravity-fed systems, usually after a drain-down, and usually announced by a tap that splutters, coughs and then gives nothing. The air sits at a high point the water can't push past at low pressure. The fixes range from patience to pressure, and persistent recurrence is a message about your pipework.


Why hot taps, why after drain-downs

Gravity hot systems run at tank-height pressure — often a fraction of mains — which is easily defeated by a compressible air pocket at a pipe run's high point. Air enters whenever the system is drained (cylinder work, tank work, repairs) and refilling doesn't always chase it out. Mains-pressure systems rarely airlock: the pressure simply shoves air through. So the classic case is precisely: gravity system, recent work, hot tap dead or spluttering.

The fixes, gentlest first

Open the affected tap fully and wait — marginal locks sometimes clear as pressure equalises. Next, the two-tap trick on a kitchen mixer: hold a cloth over the spout, open the (mains) cold and the airlocked hot together, and let mains pressure push back up the hot branch for 30–60 seconds; repeat a few times. Variants use a hose connecting a mains cold tap to the airlocked hot tap for the same back-pressure principle — effective, but do it briefly and carefully. Running a washing machine's fill can jiggle nearby locks free. Stubborn locks yield to a controlled partial drain and deliberate refill sequence, taps opened in order from the lowest up.

When it isn't an airlock

A dead tap without spluttering, no recent system work, or a gradual decline over weeks points elsewhere: a failed tap cartridge, a blocked inlet filter, a closed isolation valve, or a scale-throttled branch. Airlocks are sudden, post-work, and noisy. Cold mains outlets that die are essentially never airlocks — investigate supply and valves instead.

Recurring airlocks are a design complaint

A system that airlocks every time it's drained, or spontaneously, has a pipework fault worth fixing: a horizontal run that actually rises against flow, a missing or blocked vent, or a high-point trap created by past alterations. The permanent cures are physical — regrading the offending run, adding an air-release point at the trap, or correcting the vent arrangement. Repeatedly performing the hose trick on a badly laid pipe is treatment without cure.
