G3 is the Building Regulations qualification covering unvented hot water storage — cylinders holding water under mains pressure. The rule in one line: installing, commissioning or maintaining an unvented cylinder over 15 litres is restricted to engineers holding a current G3 certificate, and the installation is notifiable to building control. Why the rule exists
An unvented cylinder stores up to several hundred litres of water that, in a fault condition, could be heated under pressure. Water heated past 100°C in a sealed vessel flashes to steam on release with explosive energy — which is why unvented systems carry layered, independent safety controls: thermostats, a high-limit cut-out, an expansion device, and temperature and pressure relief valves discharging through visible pipework to a safe place.

Unvented systems carry a maintenance expectation with teeth: the annual service checks relief valve operation, expansion vessel charge, discharge pipework and control settings — the layers that make the system safe. £80–£150 buys it, warranties frequently demand it, and a serviced system also simply lasts longer (a flat expansion vessel quietly destroys relief valves and cylinders alike).
