Frequently asked questions
Why does my immersion heater trip the electrics?
Almost always a breaking-down element leaking current to earth — the RCD is doing its job. Repeated resetting risks turning a safe fault into an unsafe one; isolate it and book a replacement element.
How long does an immersion element last?
In soft water, 10+ years is common. In hard water, 2–5 years for a basic copper element is typical — scale is the killer. Upgraded incoloy/titanium elements last substantially longer.
My water is scalding hot — what's wrong?
The immersion thermostat has likely failed closed. Modern stats have a safety cut-out; older ones may not. Switch the immersion off and have the thermostat replaced — set correctly afterwards to 60–65°C.
Can you change an element without draining the cylinder?
Sometimes — top-entry elements above the waterline, or a fast wet-change on suitable cylinders. Side and bottom-entry elements need a partial drain-down. The engineer confirms on sight.
Is it cheaper to heat water by immersion or boiler?
Per unit of heat, electricity typically costs more than gas — the immersion is best as backup or for off-peak tariffs (heating overnight on Economy 7-style rates changes the arithmetic). We'll set timers to suit your tariff.
Do you replace immersion heaters in unvented cylinders?
Yes — noting that unvented cylinders bring G3 considerations: work affecting safety controls is qualified-engineer territory, and our routing tags unvented jobs accordingly.
