My stopcock won't turn — should I force it?
No — a snapped spindle or cracked body turns a maintenance job into an emergency. Penetrating oil and gentle working can free a stiff valve, but a seized one should be replaced under controlled isolation.
Where is my stopcock likely to be?
Under the kitchen sink is the classic location; also try under stairs, in a downstairs WC, a garage, or by the front door in flats. It's on the incoming cold main — the pipe that feeds the kitchen cold tap first.
What does it cost to replace a stopcock?
A straightforward like-for-like swap sits at the lower end of our band; awkward access, seized external valves or relocation work move it upward. You'll get the price before work starts.
What's better — a traditional stopcock or a lever valve?
Quarter-turn full-bore lever valves shut off faster, don't seize with disuse, and are our default replacement. Traditional screw-down stopcocks remain fine where regularly exercised.
My stopcock is turned off fully but water still runs — why?
The valve is passing: the washer or seat inside has failed. It needs replacing — a stopcock that doesn't stop is decorative.
Can you fit an emergency shut-off I can actually reach?
Yes — a secondary quarter-turn valve at an accessible point, or a surface-mounted remote shut-off, so isolation takes seconds rather than furniture removal.
