Preventing Frozen Pipes: UK Winter Checklist

Lag the vulnerable runs
Foam pipe lagging costs £1–£3 per metre and pushes freeze resistance dramatically for any pipe run through unheated space: loft pipework (especially above the insulation layer, where loft cold is fiercest), garage runs, pipes on outside walls, under suspended ground floors, and the first metre of the rising main if it enters through a cold void. Fit it snugly, tape joints, and don't leave gaps at bends and clips — freezes start at the gaps.
Lag the loft tank's sides and top too (never beneath — house heat rising is what keeps it liquid), and check the overflow pipe's run while you're up there: a frozen overflow is how an overfilling tank finds your ceiling.
The outside tap ritual
The single most-burst pipe in Britain gets its own ritual each autumn: disconnect hoses (a connected hose traps water in the tap body — the number-one cause of split taps), shut the internal isolation valve, open the outside tap to drain the exposed section, and leave it ajar for expansion room. Reverse in spring. No isolation valve inside? Fitting one is the year's best £40–£80.
