Washing Machine Leaking? Plumbing or Machine?

Water on the floor around a washing machine has two families of cause: the plumbing serving it (fill hoses, isolating valves, the drain standpipe) or the machine itself (door seal, pump, internal hoses). The distinction decides who you call — plumber or appliance engineer — and a few minutes of observation almost always makes the call for you. First, though, deal with the water that's arriving.


Immediate control

Turn off the machine's water supply — the small isolation valve(s) on the hoses behind the machine (lever across the pipe = off), or the main stopcock if you can't reach them. Switch the machine off at the socket if the socket is dry and safely reachable; if water is near the socket, kill the circuit at the consumer unit instead. Then towels, and pull the machine forward gently (mind the hoses) to see what's happening behind.

A machine mid-cycle holds water — don't open the door on a drum with water visible. Most machines will pump out through their drain when restarted safely later, or via the small emergency drain hose behind the lower front panel.

Reading the leak's timing

When the leak happens is the diagnosis. Wet with the machine idle and the valves open: fill hoses or their connections are leaking under constant mains pressure — plumbing side. Wet only during fill: the fill hose connections or inlet valve area. Wet during wash/spin: door seal, detergent drawer overflow (over-dosing or blocked drawer), or internal hoses — machine side. Wet at drain/pump-out: the drain hose, its standpipe connection, or a standpipe/trap that's blocked and overflowing — plumbing side again.

Run a short cycle (with supplies on and you watching, once safe) and observe. Two minutes of watching beats an hour of guessing.

The plumbing-side culprits

Fill hoses are the notorious ones: rubber hoses under permanent mains pressure age, bulge and burst — and a burst fill hose floods at full mains flow, which is why machine floods rank among the worst domestic escapes of water. Replace hoses showing bulges, cracking or rust-stained braid, and consider it routine maintenance at ten years regardless. Anti-flood hoses with an integral shut-off cost little more.

The standpipe side: a drain hose pushed too deep into the standpipe can siphon; a blocked standpipe or its trap overflows at pump-out — the classic 'leaks only when it drains'. Clearing the trap and setting the hose correctly is quick work. Weeping isolation valves, the third regular, are a five-minute swap.

Machine-side signs and the who-to-call rule

Suds or grey water arriving from under the machine mid-cycle, a door seal weeping at the front, or water traced to the pump area point at the appliance: door gaskets, pumps and internal hoses are appliance-engineer work (or the confident-DIY end of appliance repair).

The rule of thumb: water from the wall-side connections and the machine dry underneath — plumber. Water from within the machine's footprint during operation — appliance engineer. And in a rental, report either promptly: appliance leaks soak floors and downstairs ceilings quietly under the machine long before anyone sees standing water.

How do I turn off the water to just the washing machine?

The isolation valves on the fill hoses behind (or beside, under the sink) the machine — small lever valves, off when the lever sits across the pipe. No valves fitted? Add them at the next plumbing visit; they're the difference between an isolated appliance and a whole-house shut-off.

Are burst washing machine hoses really that serious?

They're among the most damaging domestic floods there are: full mains flow, often while nobody's home. Braided or anti-flood hoses, valves closed when away for long periods, and ten-year hose replacement is the cheap insurance package.

Why does my machine leak only when it empties?

The drain path can't take the pump's flow: a blocked standpipe or trap backing up, a kinked or badly seated drain hose, or a shared sink trap clogged with the usual kitchen suspects. It looks like a machine fault and is almost always a plumbing one.

The machine is new and the floor's wet — installer's fault?

Frequently: transit-bolt washers left in, fill hoses cross-threaded or missing their sealing washers, and drain hoses rammed too deep into standpipes dominate new-install leaks. Check connections before condemning the machine, and claim against the installation if that's the story.
